Spurs tame the Lions to reach FA Cup semi final

Tottenham Hotspur are into the FA Cup semi final's once again as they eased past London rivals Millwall to reach Wembley, and join Arsenal and Man City in the last four.

Spurs dominated the early exchanges having almost all of the ball, and broke through the Millwall defensive line several times at relative ease allowing lively winger Son, who already had 4 goals in the competition this season, to have a few efforts on goal from inside the box.

There was bad news for Spurs though, as main man and captain for the tie Harry Kane appeared to get his foot caught in the turf after firing an effort at goal from a tight angle, and hobbled off the pitch in the 10th minute of the game. Replays showed that his foot got caught under the sliding body of Millwall captain Craig. That seemed to disrupt Spurs' rhythm and their next chance came in the 23rd minute, as Son squared it to Alli in the penalty box, he appeared to be brought down by Craig, but the referee was having none of it as Alli protested.

But the breakthrough did come in the 30th minute of match, as Eriksen expertly twisted and volleyed the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the net as the loose ball dropped to him. Alli challenged Craig in the air after both Millwall centre halves Cooper and Webster went for the same ball. The ball rolled off Alli's chest and fell to Eriksen who finished it off. Eriksen, who replaced the injured Kane, scored his first goal in this year's FA Cup, after setting up Kane twice in the win over Fulham in the previous round.

Spurs dominated possession for the remainder of the half and were inches from doubling their lead a couple of minutes after Eriksen's opener. An excellent corner from Eriksen was met by Wanyama , and his header crashed against the face of the crossbar.

But that didn't matter as 5 minutes before the break, Son cut in from the right flank and, after a poor first touch, managed to cut inside and fire past King in the Millwall goal Son deserved the goal for his impressive first half display, he was the main threat throughout and popped up all over the field.

Millwall legend and manager Niel Harris opted for the same 4-4-2 formation that has brought them so much success this season, as they lie in a play-off position in League One. Much was made of the strike partnership that Morison and Gregory have, but the pair who have scored a combined 29 goals this season struggled to link up, with only one half chance falling to Welsh international Steve Morison outside the box and after Gregory held off Vertonghen. Gregory has 14 league goals, including a brace and a 92nd minute winner in last Saturday's 2-1 home win over MK Dons.

Spurs came out of the traps fast in the second period, with Eriksen having two efforts from dangerous territory outside the box. Ben Davies also went on a mazy run, beating three MIllwall defenders, and when he got within range he could only scuff the ball wide of the mark with a right footed effort. Spurs were rewarded for their superiority as Son got his second quality goal of the match, one which he deserved. Trippier found himself in acres of space in midfield, and on the right flank he curled a ball over the Lions' defence to find Son who volleyed home with ease.

Millwall's first effort of the second half was well worked, as Jed Wallace found Gregory in the box, and with his back to goal he found Williams who could only blast over. And Jed Wallace almost got the League One outfit back into the tie, turning a cut-back over the bar from close range.

Spurs killed off the tie with a sublime team goal, where they worked the ball from back to front in a slick move. Alderweireld found Winks in midfield, who delightfully turned O'Brien in the centre of the park to create himself time and space in the centre circle. His brilliant ball out to the wing found Trippier who squared it to Eriksen. And with space in the box, he took a first touch with his left foot, and curled the ball to the far post where Alli poked it home. Alli was replaced by summer signing Vincent Janssen in the 75th minute, and soon found the net for Spurs' 5th goal. It was a huge relief for Janssen, who was showing signs of becoming one of Spurs' flop signings, like the former Spurs number 9 Roberto Soldado. But Janssen did his reputation among Spurs fans no harm, with a classy finish with the left foot after a cut back from Son, to get his first goal in open play for the club. And Son, who unselfishly assisted Janssen for Spurs fifth, got his hat-trick with virtually the last kick of the game, his poor effort was struck softly straight at the Millwall 'keeper, but it squirmed under his body to give the South Korean his deserved match ball.
